Lighting
Gaffer / Chief Lighting Technician
The light master. Executes the DP's vision by designing and rigging lighting setups on set.
What Does a Gaffer / Chief Lighting Technician Do?
The Gaffer is the head of the electrical department and the DP's right hand when it comes to lighting. They translate the DP's visual concepts into practical lighting setups — choosing the right fixtures, positioning them for the desired effect, and managing the electrical team that rigs and operates the lights. A great gaffer understands not just the technical aspects of lighting equipment but the art of shaping light to create mood, depth, and visual interest. They manage power distribution on set, ensure electrical safety, and solve creative lighting challenges under time pressure.
