What this usually costs

We’ve described how each one charges rather than quoting prices, since those change often enough that a number here would soon be wrong.

Per-seat production suites

A monthly subscription billed for every person who needs real access.

Your AD, your DP and your producer each cost you money before a single frame is shot.

Desktop screenwriting licences

A one-time licence per machine, with paid upgrades between major versions.

A large upfront cost for one tool that only writes — it can't schedule or crew.

Freemium script tools

A free tier capped by number of active scripts, with export and collaboration paywalled.

Fine for the first project or two, then the limit turns up at an awkward moment.

ScenePaper

Free. Every tool, every seat, no card.

A first-time director shooting a weekend short pays nothing to run it properly.

Why it’s free

The tools a film needs to stay organised — a script that formats itself, a breakdown, a stripboard, a call sheet that reaches everyone — are priced for productions that have a budget line for software. A student short, a proof of concept or a first feature shot over three weekends doesn’t have one, so those films end up being run from spreadsheets and group chats.

That’s the reason ScenePaper exists, and charging the people it was built for would rather defeat the point. This isn’t a launch promotion with a timer on it.

If paid plans arrive, they will be aimed at funded productions running large teams. You will hear about it before anything changes, and nothing you have already made will be taken away or held behind a paywall.

Frequently asked questions

Is ScenePaper free?

Yes. Every tool on ScenePaper is free to use right now — screenwriting, script breakdown, scheduling, shot lists, call sheets, budgeting and crew hiring. There is no paid tier, no trial countdown and no credit card at signup.

Is the screenwriting software free?

Yes. You can write unlimited screenplays, use coloured revisions, generate sides and export formatted PDFs without paying. Scripts are stored in Fountain, an open plain-text format, so your work is never locked inside ScenePaper. (Scripts you distribute to a cast or crew list are watermarked per recipient — that is leak tracing, not a paywall.)

Do I need a credit card to sign up?

No. Creating an account needs an email address and nothing else. There is no card on file, so there is nothing that can start charging you later without you choosing to.

What is the catch?

There isn't a hidden one, but there is an honest one: ScenePaper is young. Some tools are less refined than the dedicated software they replace, and it runs in the browser rather than offline. In exchange you get the whole production pipeline in one place, free.

Will ScenePaper start charging later?

Probably, for funded productions with large teams. Solo filmmakers, students and short-film crews are the reason this exists and are not the people we intend to bill. If paid plans arrive, you will be told before anything changes, and nothing you have already made gets taken away.

Do you take a commission on hires?

Never. Zero commission is a founding principle. When a production hires a crew member through ScenePaper, neither side pays us a cut. You would pay for tools, never for a connection.

Can I get my work out if I stop using ScenePaper?

Yes. Scripts, sides and call sheets download as PDF, and your script is stored as Fountain — an open plain-text format you can copy straight out and open in any editor. You can also request a full export of your account data at any time from The Booth.
