Art & Production Design

Art Director

Executes the production designer's vision and runs the art department day to day.

The Art Director Role

The Art Director translates the production designer's vision into buildable, budgeted reality and runs the art department practically. They manage the construction coordinator, set decorator and props master, track the department budget, and solve the constant tension between what was designed and what can be built in the time and money available. On many productions the art director is the person who actually makes the design happen, while the designer holds the vision.

When to Hire a Art Director

FAQ

Art Director — Common Questions

What does an art director do?
They execute the production designer's vision — managing the art department, tracking its budget, coordinating construction, dressing and props, and producing buildable technical drawings from designs.
What is the difference between an art director and a production designer?
The designer owns the creative vision for the film's physical world. The art director makes it happen practically and on budget. On small productions one person does both.
Do I need an art director if I have a production designer?
Once there is construction or significant dressing, yes — otherwise the designer spends their time managing rather than designing, and the design suffers.
