The Fall Circuit Is Locked — And Toronto Just Added a Market

The fall circuit is the part of the calendar where a finished independent film either finds a buyer or starts a very long year. The 2026 dates are now fixed, and one structural change is worth more attention than any single premiere.

Venice and Telluride overlap by five days, and Toronto opens the day Telluride closes. That compression is normal and it is why travel and print traffic get decided in August, not September.

What is in the Venice competition this year?

Twenty-one films are competing for the Golden Lion at the 83rd edition, with Maggie Gyllenhaal as jury president. Danny Boyle's Ink opens the festival. The competition includes Hirokazu Kore-eda's Look Back, Lee Chang-dong's Possible Love, Martin McDonagh's Wild Horse Nine, Nanni Moretti's It Will Happen Tonight, Florian Zeller's Bunker and Ilya Khrzhanovsky's DAU. Ellen Burstyn and George Clooney receive Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement, and Luca Guadagnino takes the Glory to the Filmmaker Award.

What actually changed at Toronto in 2026?

Two things, and both are commercial rather than editorial.

TIFF launched its own market. TIFF: The Market runs 10–16 September at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, physically separate from the public screenings, with 650 market screening slots and an expanded speaker summit. CAA, UTA and WME are confirmed with completed and packaged projects. Toronto has always functioned as a de facto market; this is the first edition where that is the stated product, with a venue and a slot count attached.

Platform got bigger and got Oscar weight. The Platform competition expands from 10 titles to 12, judged by a five-member international jury led by Pablo Trapero and including Amma Asante, Sylvia Chang, Luc Déry and Albert Lee. A non-English-language Platform winner now qualifies directly for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards, putting Platform among the small set of festival competitions carrying automatic qualification.

For a producer with a finished non-English feature, that second change is the single most consequential line in this year's circuit announcements. It converts one competition slot into a shortcut past a national submission process you may not control.

The 51st edition opens with Siân Heder's Being Heumann and closes with Yan Lanouette Turgeon's Villeneuve: The Rise of a Legend.

How should a small team use the next three weeks?

Assume you are not premiering, because most teams are not, and plan the trip as a market trip.

1. Decide the ask before you book. Sales agent, festival programmer, co-production partner, or finance. These are four different sets of meetings and four different decks. Our festival strategy guide breaks the sequencing down.
2. Treat Toronto's market week as its own event. 10–16 September at the Convention Centre is a different building, a different badge and a different rhythm from the festival that surrounds it.

What about Telluride?

Telluride runs 3–7 September and, as usual, keeps its lineup confidential until immediately before the festival. That is a deliberate feature of the event and not something to plan around. If you are going, go for the room, not the programme.
