Founder & Editor, ScenePaper
Geenesh S is the founder and sole operator of ScenePaper, a production workspace and crew marketplace built for film and OTT work in India and beyond. He designed and wrote the platform end to end — the screenplay editor, the stripboard, the call sheet system and the crew marketplace that sits under all of it.
That work is where this writing comes from. Building schedule and budget tooling means reading the actual documents productions run on — day-out-of-days grids, coloured revision pages, camera reports, DPRs — and finding out exactly where they break down in practice. The posts here are the notes from that: what a page eighth really measures, why company moves quietly eat a shooting day, what a 1st AD is actually accountable for.
ScenePaper is operated from Coimbatore, India. Corrections and disputes about anything published here are welcome and get a reply — the contact address below reaches him directly.
Courier 12, a 1.5-inch left margin, and six elements that do all the work. Here is standard screenplay format element by element — scene headings, action, character, dialogue, parentheticals and transitions — with an example page and the Fountain you would type to get it.
Nani's The Paradise crossed ₹100 crore India net inside a week and nearly doubled his best opening. It also lost 57% of its business on day two and more than 90% in North America. Both halves of that curve belong in your next budget.
In five weeks the idea of a US federal production incentive went from a presidential post to a bipartisan bill with union backing. It has not passed. Here is what it proposes, how it would sit on top of state credits like California's, and what crews should actually watch.
The compositor combines every layer of a visual effects shot — the filmed plate, CG renders, mattes and fixes — into one image an audience believes. Here is the pipeline behind that, how it differs in animation, and how people get into it.
Mirzapur: The Movie was India's biggest release of September 2026, crossing ₹210 crore net. What a series-to-film move changes for the crew who shoot it and the producers who plan it.
OpenAI removed the Sora API on 24 September 2026, five months after closing the app. If your previs, pitch or temp shots came out of it, here is what to archive, what to put in the contract, and how to judge the replacement.
The camera operator physically runs the camera: composing and moving the shot the director of photography has set, repeating it take after take, and guarding the frame. Here is where the job starts and stops.
The last legal challenge to Paramount's purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery was settled on 21 September 2026. The settlement put numbers on film output and a fund for displaced workers. Here is what it does and does not protect if you work on a crew.
A call sheet builder is easy to find. What separates the tools is whether the sheet comes from your schedule, how it reaches crew who will never install an app, and what happens when the call changes at 10pm. What to test, and six options compared honestly.
IBC 2026 had no new cinema camera flagship. What it had was firmware for cameras crews already own, a mirrorless B-cam candidate at a quarter of the price of the A-cam, and new anamorphic and zoom glass with no prices attached yet. Here is what each one means for a kit fee, a rental order and an indie budget.
The focus puller is the 1st Assistant Camera — the person who keeps the image sharp on every take and runs the camera department day to day, under the DP and the operator.
Every breakdown tool can tag a prop. The differences that cost you days are what it imports, whether it guesses for you, and where the breakdown goes once it is finished. Here is what to test, and an honest look at six options.
Resolve 21.1 ships an MCP server, so Claude or Codex can organise media, cut a highlight reel and queue renders. For assistant editors, DITs, colourists and small post houses, the useful question is not whether it works in a demo, but which jobs to hand over and what to check first.
Vancouver entered 2026 with senior technical vacancies taking an average of 127 days to fill, while junior artists faced more than fifty applicants per posting. Both numbers describe the same market, and neither is a hiring problem you can solve by posting harder.
The colorist decides what the film finally looks like. It is the last creative pass before delivery, it is two quite different jobs sharing one title, and most of its outcome is determined months earlier on set.
Two different IATSE locals cover what most people call one department. Knowing which is which is the difference between a hiring order that works and a production designer with nobody to draw for them.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects sound engineering technicians to lose jobs through 2035 and names AI as a reason. The productions that still book foley are not the ones that cannot afford a library — they are the ones that can hear the difference.
The production sound mixer runs the sound department on set: they record the audio the film is actually cut with, and they are the only person on the floor whose job is to hear the take rather than watch it.
The Academy has created a competitive award for stunt design, first presented at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028 for films released in 2027. Here is what a stunt department actually does, and what a category changes for the people in it.
No budgeting software has a column for scenes, because money in a film budget attaches to days and departments, not to pages. That does not make the question wrong — it makes it a two-step question, and this is the second step.
The production designer is the head of the art department and the author of everything the camera sees that is not a person — sets, locations, colour, texture, and the logic holding them together.
Job boards are built around hiring one person for one role. Productions do not work that way — they crew a department at once, half of it freelance, against a schedule that is already moving.
SAG-AFTRA's first-ever collective bargaining agreement for intimacy coordinators applies to projects that start principal photography on or after 22 February 2026. If you schedule days, run a floor or book crew, this is a prep item — not a compliance checkbox you tick on the morning.
They are not seniority levels and they are not interchangeable. One holds a pyrotechnics licence and stops takes; the other manages vendors through to delivery. Productions that hire the wrong one usually find out on the day.
The line producer builds the budget and then defends it for the length of the shoot. The line in the title is the line items — every cost the production will actually incur.
Q1 2026 looked like the turn everyone was waiting for — features up 52% year over year. Q2 gave it back. Put the two FilmLA releases side by side and a different story appears: the tax credit is capturing a bigger share of a smaller industry.

Hindi leads the year, a Hollywood tentpole sits second, and August's receipts split almost evenly between Hindi and Tamil. That distribution is a hiring map.

Roto, paint and matchmove are the roles industry analysts expect to go first — and they are concentrated in exactly one place. What that means for VFX careers.
Specs still matter, but mostly as a calling card. The paid work comes from rewrites, assignments and adaptations — which changes what you should write.
Job boards, Facebook groups, and the referral network that still does most of the work. Where each one is strong, and where it quietly fails you.
The blank-cheque streamer commission is over. What replaced it is a layered capital stack — and commissioners now expect 30–40% soft-locked before you pitch.
YouTube Shorts passed 200 billion daily views. The constraint on vertical performance is no longer media budget — it is production capacity.

Turnaround windows have compressed to 12–24 hours, casting teams are using AI to organise submissions, and you are now competing globally. What that changes.
Panellists at SXSW 2026 called the traditional model dead for 99% of creators. What replaced it is smaller, more direct, and measured differently.

AI in the pipeline, microdramas at scale, virtual production going affordable, incentives reshaping where films shoot, and production going genuinely polycentric. A working filmmaker's summary.
Shot on film, handheld, minimally processed. A visible counter-trend has emerged against AI-generated imagery — and it's a marketing position as much as an aesthetic one.
