A short is not a small feature
The most common short film mistake is a feature premise squeezed into ten minutes: too many characters, too much backstory, an ending that arrives before the story has started. A short works best around one idea and one turn — a single situation that changes once, decisively.
Finding an idea that fits
Good short film ideas tend to be:
- A moment, not a saga — one evening, one conversation, one decision.
- Contained — one or two locations, two or three characters.
- Built around a reveal or a reversal — the thing we learn at the end reframes everything before it.
The logline test still applies: if you cannot say it in a sentence, it is probably too big.
Structure
Shorts compress three acts into a handful of pages:
- Hook (first page). Drop us into the situation. No establishing walk to the front door.
- Complication (the middle). One obstacle or escalation.
- Turn and out (the last page or two). The reversal lands — and the film ends. Shorts are weakened more by lingering endings than by abrupt ones.
Start late, leave early applies to every scene, and to the film as a whole.
Write what you can shoot
On a short, the script is the budget. Every location is a permit and a company move; every extra is a costume and a meal; night exteriors and moving vehicles are expensive. None of that means writing small ideas — it means expressing them through what is cheap to shoot: faces, a single room, a phone.
Mistakes programmers see constantly
- Opening with an alarm clock or a character waking up.
- A twist that depends on withholding obvious information rather than a genuine reframing.
- Dialogue that explains the backstory instead of letting the situation show it.
- Running long. A 20-minute short competes with ten 2-minute shorts for the same programme slot.
Writing one
Shorts use standard screenplay format. ScenePaper's free Writers' Room has a Short Film template to start from, and when the script is done the same project carries through to breakdown, scheduling and call sheets — useful when the writer is also the producer, as on most shorts. For length, see How Many Pages Is a Screenplay?.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a short film script be?+
Most short film scripts are 5 to 15 pages, at roughly one page per minute of screen time. Shorter films are easier for festivals to programme, so many writers aim for under 10 pages.
Is a short film script formatted differently from a feature?+
No. A short uses the same screenplay format — scene headings, action, character names and dialogue. The differences are in scope and structure, not layout.
How many characters should a short film have?+
As few as the story allows — often two or three with speaking parts. Each extra character needs introducing, which takes screen time a short does not have.
