The shift, in one line
For most of the last century, "the Indian film industry" meant Bombay. That has not been accurate for some time.
Telugu cinema accounted for roughly 20 percent of India's domestic gross in 2024. Tamil, Telugu and Kannada industries have set the benchmarks in scale and visual effects across several recent years, while Punjabi, Bengali and Marathi cinema have built durable regional audiences of their own. The Indian entertainment market overall was valued in the billions in 2025 and is projected to roughly double over the following decade.
For crew, the practical consequence is straightforward: a large and growing share of the work is not in Mumbai.
What is different about how they produce
The southern industries are not simply Bollywood in another language. The production models differ in ways that matter if you are looking for work.
Tighter budgets, harder schedules. Regional productions generally run leaner, relying more on writing, performance and local crew than on star salaries and imported VFX. That means the 1st AD and line producer roles carry more weight, and a crew member who is genuinely fast is valued accordingly.
Deeper local crew bases. Hyderabad and Chennai have real, established crew ecosystems — not overflow capacity from Mumbai. Departments are staffed locally and department heads bring their own teams.
Higher VFX ambition per rupee. Southern productions have consistently delivered visual scale on budgets that would not attempt it elsewhere. That has built genuine VFX depth in Hyderabad in particular.
Volume. More titles, shot faster. For a freelancer, the gaps between jobs are the problem, and volume is the solution.
Where the work actually is
Hyderabad — Telugu cinema's centre, with the largest concentration of studio infrastructure and VFX houses in the region. Strongest for camera, VFX and large-unit work. Crew here.
Chennai — Tamil cinema, with particularly strong post-production, sound and music infrastructure. Crew here.
Bangalore — Kannada cinema plus a very large volume of commercial, corporate and tech-sector content work. Often the most reliable city for consistent non-feature income. Crew here.
Kochi — Malayalam cinema, disproportionately influential relative to its size, and the industry most consistently praised for writing.
What this means if you are Mumbai-based
Two honest observations.
First, the language barrier is smaller than people assume for below-the-line roles. Camera, grip, electric, VFX and post are technical departments where the working vocabulary is largely English regardless of the production's language. Direction, script and performance-adjacent roles are a different matter.
Second, the relationship barrier is larger than people assume. These industries hire through networks like everywhere else, and being unknown in Hyderabad is the same problem as being unknown anywhere. If you want to work in the southern industries
Make your location and travel willingness explicit. A producer in Chennai filtering for an editor does not want to guess whether a Mumbai-based candidate will actually relocate for a six-week post schedule.
Show format-relevant work. Regional productions want evidence you have worked at their pace and scale, not just that you have worked.
Learn the courtesies, not the language. Nobody expects fluent Telugu from a focus puller. Basic set courtesies in the local language are noticed and cost you an afternoon to learn.
Track your availability honestly. The single most common complaint from producers across every Indian industry is crew who accept and then become unavailable.
The broader point
The useful framing is not "Bollywood versus the rest." It is that Indian production has become genuinely polycentric, and the film business globally has followed the same pattern — Seoul, Mumbai, Lagos and São Paulo now account for a substantial share of scripted feature production hours.
If your professional network is built entirely around one city, that is a strategic risk regardless of which city it is.
