A $2.22 billion film is a good headline. The more useful fact is buried in the production notes: the highest-grossing film of 2026 was crewed in Scotland and the Home Counties.
Where did the highest-grossing film of 2026 actually shoot?
Glasgow and Buckinghamshire. Principal photography on Spider-Man: Brand New Day ran from 3 August to 19 December 2025, with Glasgow standing in for New York and soundstage work at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire. Additional units worked at Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey, Battersea Park and Senate House in London, HM Prison Dorchester, Hertford County Hall, and Chatham Historic Dockyard in Kent. Destin Daniel Cretton directed, with Brett Pawlak shooting.
The film cost $225 million and has taken $2.22 billion worldwide — the highest-grossing Spider-Man film, the highest-grossing release of 2026, and the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time. Every one of those records was earned by a unit whose call sheets listed British addresses.
Why does a New York story shoot in Scotland?
Because the rebate and the stage space are there, and because the crew depth now is too.
UK production spend reached £5.6 billion in 2024, a 31% increase year on year, according to the UK government. Pinewood Group states that Disney, Netflix and Amazon have entered long-term agreements covering all 60 purpose-built stages at Pinewood and Shepperton. When three buyers have locked the stages for years at a time, the location decision stops being a creative one and becomes a scheduling one.
None of that is a coincidence of taste. It is the same mechanism we traced in California's incentive results and in the treaty and offset landscape: production goes where the money comes back.
What does this mean for crew who are not in the UK?
It means the market you are competing in is jurisdictional, not corporate.
| What crew usually track | What actually decides the booking |
|---|---|
| Which studio has a slate | Which territory the slate can claim relief in |
| Which director is attached | Which stages had availability in the window |
| Whether the industry is "back" | Whether your specific city is on the rebate map |
We have covered the loss side of this before: US Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows motion picture and video production shed 49,000 jobs over a decade, and Variety puts post-2022 losses at 73,000 with roughly two-thirds concentrated in Los Angeles. Those jobs did not evaporate. A meaningful share of them are the ones that clocked in at Pinewood last autumn. The full breakdown is in where the film jobs went.
Is the UK actually hiring, or is it just hosting?
Both, and it has been explicit about the second part. The UK government's Youth Guarantee announcement in January 2026 committed £820 million toward 350,000 training and workplace opportunities, with Pinewood Studios as an official supporter alongside Netflix, Disney, Amazon MGM Studios, Marvel Studios, Apple TV+, Sky, Channel 4 and Vue. Pinewood's Behind the Screen programme offers paid six-month placements.
That is a country building the crew base to keep the stages full after the current agreements lapse. It is worth reading as a signal about where entry-level positions will exist in three years, which is a different question from where they exist today.
What should you do about it this month?
- Price the jurisdiction, not the job. Before you turn down a relocation, work out what the local rebate does to the volume of work in that territory over a year. Our guide to film tax incentives in 2026 has the current map.
- Get your credits legible to someone who has never met you. A production hiring into a foreign territory cannot rely on a referral chain. It relies on what it can verify. That is what a Crew Card is for.
- Watch the stage deals, not the announcements. Long-term stage agreements are the earliest reliable indicator of where units will be based, and they are published well before any crew call is.
The gross is not the news. The address on the call sheet is.
