Clapper Loader / 2nd AC

Slates every take, manages media, and keeps the camera report that post depends on.

The Clapper Loader Role

The Clapper Loader, or 2nd Assistant Camera, slates every take, manages camera media and maintains the camera report. They mark actors, handle the clapperboard for sync, load and label cards or magazines, and log each take with roll, scene, slate, take and circle status. The camera report they produce travels with the media to post and is what an editor uses to know what exists. It is the entry point into the camera department and the role where precision habits are formed.

Camera Report TemplateA camera report is the log of every take recorded on a shoot day. It records the roll, scene, slate and take number, the lens and camera settings, the duration and timecode, and which takes the director selected. It travels with the media to post so the editor knows what exists and what was preferred.Free template · every field explained

When to Hire a Clapper Loader

On any production with a camera department of more than two people, and on anything shooting significant volume where media management matters. The 2nd AC is what stops footage being lost and stops the edit becoming an archaeology exercise. Small documentary crews often fold the role into the operator or DIT.

FAQ

Clapper Loader — Common Questions

What does a clapper loader do?
They slate every take, manage and label camera media, maintain the camera report including circle takes, and mark actor positions for the focus puller. The report they produce travels with the media to post.
Why does the slate matter?
It gives picture and sound a common sync reference and identifies the take unambiguously. An inaccurate or reused slate makes the edit significantly harder and is a common source of confusion in post.
What is the difference between a 2nd AC and a DIT?
The 2nd AC slates, loads and logs. The DIT manages data integrity, backup verification, on-set colour and dailies. On small crews one person may cover both, but they are distinct responsibilities.
