Dolly Grip

Operates the dolly. A move that lands on the beat is a performance in itself.

The Dolly Grip Role

The Dolly Grip operates the camera dolly, executing moves in precise coordination with performance, focus and framing. It is a more skilled job than it appears — a dolly move has to accelerate, hold and stop on specific beats, repeatably, take after take, while the operator frames and the focus puller pulls. Good dolly grips are remembered by cinematographers for years, because a move that lands is invisible and a move that doesn't ruins an otherwise perfect take.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate the dolly during takes with precise timing
  • Lay and level track for camera movement
  • Rehearse moves with the operator, focus puller and cast
  • Maintain dolly, track and camera support equipment
  • Advise on achievable movement in the available space
  • Support the key grip with rigging and light shaping

When to Hire a Dolly Grip

On any day with dolly or track work, booked with the grip department. A dolly without a dedicated grip operating it is a shot that will not repeat consistently, which matters because you will shoot it more than once. Budget them for the days that need moves rather than the whole schedule if the shoot is light on movement.

What to Look For

  • Precision and repeatability across multiple takes
  • Experience with your specific dolly and track system
  • Ability to rehearse with the operator, focus puller and cast
  • Physical smoothness — the move should be invisible
  • Recommended by the key grip or a DP you trust

FAQ

Dolly Grip — Common Questions

What does a dolly grip do?
They operate the camera dolly, executing moves in precise coordination with performance, focus and framing, and lay and level the track. A move has to land on the same beat take after take.
Is dolly grip a skilled job?
Considerably more than it looks. The move must accelerate, hold and stop on specific beats, repeatably, while the operator frames and the focus puller pulls. Cinematographers remember good dolly grips for years.
Can I use a slider instead of a dolly?
For short, simple moves, often yes and far cheaper. For sustained moves following action through a space, a dolly on track with a dedicated grip is a different capability.
