2nd Assistant Director

Prepares call sheets, moves cast through the day, and runs the AD department away from the floor.

The 2nd Assistant Director Role

The 2nd Assistant Director supports the 1st AD by handling everything that keeps the day running away from the camera. They prepare and distribute the call sheet, complete the daily production report, manage cast through makeup and wardrobe so performers arrive on set ready, and coordinate background performers. Most of their work happens at unit base rather than on the floor. It is the role where most ADs learn how a production actually functions, because almost every department passes through them at some point in the day.

Call Sheet TemplateA call sheet is the daily document sent to a film crew before each shoot day. It states the general call time, individual call times per person, which scenes are being shot, the location and its address, cast requirements, and safety information. It is the single reference everyone works from that day.Free template · every field explained

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete the daily production report after wrap
  • Move cast through makeup, hair and wardrobe to meet set times
  • Coordinate background performers and crowd

  • Support the 1st AD in running the shooting day

When to Hire a 2nd Assistant Director

Once the 1st AD is attached and the shoot is large enough that one person cannot run the floor and manage cast simultaneously — practically, any production with more than a handful of cast or significant background. The 2nd AD typically starts a week or two before principal photography to prepare the first call sheets.
