What did IBC 2026 bring for camera crews?
IBC 2026 in Amsterdam (11-14 September) brought no new flagship cinema camera. The useful news for crews was firmware: Canon added accessory control and a highlight-protecting exposure mode to cameras already in use. Canon showed its R6 V, launched in May; Sony.s FX5 had launched in July, RED showed live-broadcast set-ups, and new anamorphic and zoom lenses arrived without prices.
That matters more than it sounds. A trade show without a new flagship is a show where the kit on your cart does not lose value overnight, and where the decision in front of most cinematographers and camera operators is not "what do I buy" but "what do I pair with what I already own".
The show, in one table

The firmware is the real news if you already own the camera
RedShark News reported on 12 September that Canon's new Cinema EOS firmware gives the C50, C80 and C400 USB camera control for gimbals and third-party accessories, plus Atomos monitor integration for triggering recording and adjusting settings. On the C80 and C400 only, a Cinema Exposure Mode gives, in RedShark's words, "an additional two stops of highlight information when shooting above a base ISO", and switches the camera into Canon Log 2. RedShark says the firmware is available now from Canon's support site.
For an owner-operator, two extra stops of highlight room above base ISO is the difference between holding a window and blowing it on a run-and-gun interior. It costs nothing, and it widens the gap between the C80 and the C50 in a way a production can ask about. If you own a C50, be clear with a DP who has read the headline: the mode does not come to your body.
The B-cam question: R6 V, FX5, or a second body of the same
The Canon EOS R6 V is not an IBC launch. Canon announced it on 13 May 2026, and RedShark News reported the US prices at the time: $2,499 body only, $3,699 with the new RF 20-50mm F4 power zoom. RedShark gave the sensor as 32.5MP full-frame, with 7K RAW to 60p, 7K open-gate RAW to 30p, Canon Log 2 and Log 3, in-body stabilisation rated to 7.5 stops with a specific lens, a three-speed fan and dual CFexpress Type B and SD slots. At IBC, Canon told RedShark the camera was for pros "who didn't need everything that our entry-level C50 did: things like timecode input or a top handle with XLR".
That sentence is the B-cam decision. Matching a C80 or C400 A-camera with an R6 V gets you the same mount and the same Canon Log 2 curve, which makes the grade easier. It does not get you timecode in, so sync becomes a slate-and-waveform job, and it does not get you XLR audio on the body. On a two-camera interview that is fine. On a drama where the focus puller is wireless and the sound recorder expects jammed timecode on every camera, it is a cost that lands on somebody else's department.
Sony's FX5, announced on 22 July, sits a price step higher. RedShark News reported a 16.6MP full-frame stacked sensor, three base ISOs (800, 4000 and 12,800), internal 16-bit X-OCN and open-gate recording in X-OCN only, at $4,999 body only or $5,499 with the XLR handle in the US. Sony's RM-DP7 and RM-DP5 control monitors, announced on 9 September, were reported by Y.M. Cinema at €3,300 and €2,500, controlling the FX5, FX3, FX2 and FX30 at launch, with shipping expected in January 2027. A monitor-controller that costs most of an R6 V is a rig decision, not an accessory.
What it means for owner-operator kit fees
An owner-operator's kit fee pays back the body, the glass, the media and the time spent maintaining them. Three things follow from IBC 2026.
- Firmware is not a rate rise, but it is a reason to hold your rate. A C80 that now protects two more stops of highlights is a better camera than it was in August. Say so on the quote; do not add a line for it.
- A $2,499 body is a cheap second camera, not a cheap A-camera. If you add an R6 V as a B-cam, price it as a B-cam and state the limits on the quote: no timecode input, no XLR on the body.
- Lenses without prices are not a quote. If a director asks for the new Sirui anamorphics, quote what you own or can rent, not what was shown in Amsterdam.
In India, none of the manufacturer reports we read carried rupee prices or Indian availability dates for these products. Import duty and dealer margin move the number, so budget from a dealer quote, not a converted dollar figure.
What it means for rental houses
RED's stand said the most about where rental demand is going. According to RED's pre-show announcement, carried by Creative COW on 4 September, there was no new camera. Instead, V-RAPTOR cameras with dual fisheye lenses captured 8K at 50fps and streamed it live over fibre via RED Connect to Apple Vision Pro headsets; a V-RAPTOR XL [X] sat on a Dinky Dolly with anamorphic glass, sending live wireless feeds to a DIT cart; and RED said its Cine-Broadcast Module had been used by CBS Sports, NBC Sports Group and Netflix.
For a rental house, that is a signal that cinema bodies are being booked for live and sport work, which means longer bookings, more fibre and wireless-video add-ons, and crews who need broadcast habits. For the camera crews that houses send out with the kit, it means work beyond scripted drama, and an eye on what the job actually needs, whether that is the coverage in a shot list or a ring-walk.
On the glass side, Photo Rumors listed the Sirui Saturn V2 as 1.6x full-frame anamorphics with several mount options, and DZOFilm's Arles as new cine zooms, and reported new Viltrox autofocus lenses, including an L-mount range. None of the reports we could read gave full focal ranges or prices. Wait for them before you add a line to a rental catalogue.
What didn't change
The top of the market did not move. No new flagship cinema body arrived from Canon, Sony or RED at the show, so the cameras productions already specify, and the ones rental houses already stock, are still the ones on the job. Film, if that is your look, is still film; nothing at IBC changes the case in shooting analog. And the basic crew arithmetic, an operator and a focus puller on every camera that turns on a drama, is the same whether the B-cam costs $2,499 or ten times that.
What this piece cannot tell you
This is a reading of manufacturer announcements and trade-press reports, not a hands-on test. We have not measured the Cinema Exposure Mode's two stops; that figure is RedShark News reporting Canon. Canon's and Sony's own press pages did not load for us, so their specifications and US prices are cited from RedShark News, and at least one other outlet lists a slightly lower FX5 price. We did not find rupee pricing for any product, and the Sirui, DZOFilm and Viltrox lenses had no published prices in the reports we read. Prices change after launch; check before you quote.
Before you commit
If you are planning a two-camera shoot on the back of this, write the B-camera's limits into the shot list before the day: which set-ups need timecode sync, which need clean highlights, which the smaller body will cover. The camera is the easy part to change. The schedule is not.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Canon announce a new cinema camera at IBC 2026?+
No new Cinema EOS body. Canon used IBC 2026 to show the EOS R6 V, a video-focused full-frame mirrorless camera it had announced on 13 May 2026, and to release firmware for the C50, C80 and C400 adding USB accessory control, Atomos monitor integration and, on the C80 and C400, a Cinema Exposure Mode.
What is Canon's Cinema Exposure Mode?+
It is a firmware mode for the Canon C80 and C400, released around IBC 2026. According to RedShark News, it gives an additional two stops of highlight information when shooting above a base ISO and switches the camera into Canon Log 2 automatically. The C50 does not get it.
Is the Canon R6 V a good B-camera for a Cinema EOS A-camera?+
It can be, with caveats. It shares the RF mount and Canon Log 2 with Cinema EOS bodies, shoots 7K RAW and has a cooling fan, and costs $2,499 body only in the US. It lacks the timecode input and XLR top handle of the C50, which Canon itself named as the difference, so sync and audio need planning.
Did RED announce a new camera at IBC 2026?+
No. RED's IBC 2026 stand showed existing V-RAPTOR, V-RAPTOR XL, V-RAPTOR XE and KOMODO-X cameras in live-broadcast set-ups, including an 8K 50fps dual-fisheye feed to Apple Vision Pro headsets and a V-RAPTOR XL on a Dinky Dolly with anamorphic lenses feeding a DIT cart wirelessly.
How much do the Sirui Saturn V2 and DZOFilm Arles lenses cost?+
The reports of their IBC 2026 announcement that we could read did not publish prices or full focal-length lists for either line. Check the manufacturer or an authorised dealer before quoting them in a budget or a rental order.
